About My Work

Most of my paintings have been inspired through my participation in sport; I play tennis, squash, racketball, basketball, netball and have now found golf.

As part of my investigations I have tried fluorescent colours and the lines of the squash court to develop large scale canvases to create the impression of space and have also used crochet to develop texture and this was used in my tennis paintings.

My most recent work is based on golf. As I walk around the golf course trying to play the game, I am often over-whelmed by the abundance of beauty nature has to offer. Of course these distractions have lead many a ball to find a pond, a gorse bush or totally disappear into the trees. Because of these 'hazards' as a golf player calls them, I have found a new perspective with nature. Seeing a pond or a flower close up is all a part of my round of golf. From a golfer's point of view the wish is strong to keep out of the rough, but when the unfortunate happens, it's where I find my inspiration!

My observations have allowed me to put down what I see and feel on canvas, I take a camera with me and if the opportunity arises I take a photo to help me remember an incident or shape and this helps me when I'm in my studio. Although I am interested in the image the colour and line are just as important.

My work with the crochet is still continuing and I recently finished a project for the group exhibition with Eden Valley Artists called 'Aspects of Love'. I used crochet to create 'the fragile heart,' the heart although looking fragile, is made stronger because of the crochet strands supporting it, the whole piece was also apparently floating in a space.
